In Defense of Satan

Let me tell you a little story.

There once was a god named Yahwah who made a garden called Eden. Eden was his idea of a paradise. He then created humans to live in Eden. He told them they could do whatever they wished except eating an apple. Apples were verbotten because they would die if they ate one. However, a snake named Satan came along and told them that god lied. If they ate apples they would become gods. And so they ate an apple. They did not die as the god had told them, but instead became gods, knowing right from wrong. Before they were but animals. Now they possessed the ability to construct great things for good or ill.

Let me tell you another story.

There once was a god named Zeus who had the earth populated with animals by the titan Promethius. Promethius created every animal, including humans who were the last of his creations. The titan loved his final creation, and wanted to give humans the gift of fire. However, Zeus declared giving fire verbotten to Promethius. He was worried that although they could do and build great things, they could also wage war and unleash great evil. Fortunately, Promethius defied Zeus, and gave humans fire. Before humans were animals. Now they possessed the ability to construct great things for good or ill, the powers of a god.

So what is my point?

These two stories are very similar. They involve humans learning to use their mind and intellect to manipulate their environment. It is the one thing that seperates them from animals. It is the thing that makes humans like gods. However, the reaction to the stories is very different. One society thought that learning to think was a horrible thing and prefered the thoughtless animal state. The other society thought that learning to think was a great thing. It was a gift to be cherished and used.

And what are the results?

The society that hated thinking was ancient Israel. They were a nomadic, tribal society. They operated under a dictatorship until they were conquered. Even to this day the area is plagued by violence, fanaticism, and inequality for women and minorities.

The other society was ancient Greece. The greeks brought us Plato, Aristole, and Socrates. The greeks brought us the first known democratic form of government. It wasn't perfect, but it was certainly a step in the right direction. And the Romans thought so much of the greeks that they adopted much of their religion and society after they finally overwhelmed and conquered them through superior numbers.

The society that abhorred Satan's gift become a backwards, impoverished society. The society that embraced the spirit of freethinking became an wealthy and enlightened for the time society that has been an enduring inspiration to those who would make life better by constructing things of benefit to all.

Let's hear it for Satan.
